To Lam departs for UNGA 81, US activities, and Canada state visit
Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam has departed Hanoi for a high-level working trip from September 20 to 25, 2026. The mission includes attending the 81st UN General Assembly high-level debate, conducting bilateral activities in the United States, and paying a state visit to Canada.
In the United States, the visit aims to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. As of July 2026, Vietnam has become the fifth-largest trading partner of the U.S., with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$137.42 billion in the first eight months of 2026, representing a 23.4% year-on-year increase.
The state visit to Canada marks the first time a Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President has visited the country. Canadian Ambassador Jim Nickel noted the visit provides significant political momentum to advance bilateral ties, particularly in sectors such as trade, investment, energy security, and advanced technologies like semiconductors and AI.
