Tobacco use increases lung cancer risk by up to 20 times
Medical experts warn that tobacco use increases the risk of lung cancer by 15 to 20 times. Professor Esengül Koçak, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Health Sciences, stated that tobacco products contain over 7,000 harmful substances, approximately 70 of which are known carcinogens.
These substances affect the body's inflammatory system and can cause DNA damage, leading to various cancers, including bladder cancer. The risk level is directly correlated with the duration of use and the daily quantity of cigarettes consumed. Koçak also noted that electronic cigarettes and passive smoking pose significant health risks, emphasizing that secondhand smoke can be as dangerous for non-smokers as active smoking is for users.
