Tobago House of Assembly moves to digitise accounting systems
The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is working to digitise its accounting operations to reduce payment delays and enhance financial monitoring. Secretary of Finance, Trade and the Economy Petal-Ann Roberts announced that the THA is engaging FreeBalance, the firm responsible for digitising government financial operations in Trinidad, following previous implementation difficulties in Tobago.
The proposed digital system aims to process payments and financial reports more efficiently while allowing administrators to better monitor transactions and identify issues. While a specific timeline for completion was not provided, Roberts noted that technology alone is not the sole solution. The THA is also implementing administrative improvements, including enhanced training and supervision.
To support these operational changes, the Division of Finance has hired an experienced former public servant with over 30 years of experience as a management accountant. This role is intended to assist with staff training and improve efficiency across various departments. The initiative focuses on improving the timeliness of payments to contractors and service providers.
