Shuri Castle restoration spurs Great Okinawa exhibition in Tokyo

The historic Shuri Castle in Okinawa, severely damaged by a 2019 fire, is scheduled for full restoration with completion expected in November 2026. Alongside the rebuilding, authorities are preparing to open the underground World War II‐era 32nd Army Headquarters bunker to the public, preserving the wartime command post that once directed Japanese forces during the Battle of Okinawa.

To commemorate the castle’s revival, Tobu Department Store’s Ikebukuro flagship will host the “Great Okinawa Exhibition” from 6 – 11 August 2026. The six‑day event showcases Okinawan cuisine, including a palace‑style “Mifuku” banquet, Sōki MIX soba, specialty onigiri, and limited‑edition Ryukyu awamori. Daily indoor live music, cultural performances, and a special procession of a Ryukyu‑king mascot are planned. The exhibition features 79 stalls (48 food, 31 craft) with 18 new exhibitors, offering visitors a taste of Okinawan heritage while the castle restoration proceeds.
