Toby Young warns of UK free speech risks amid rise in social media arrests

Citing a report by Big Brother Watch, Young argues that the focus on policing online speech threatens civil liberties and the nation's tradition of free expression.

Young suggests that police resources are being diverted from addressing rising crime rates, such as shoplifting, mobile phone robberies, and sexual offences, toward monitoring online activity. The report indicates significant regional disparities, with some police forces making up to 14 times more arrests per capita for online offences than neighboring jurisdictions. Young attributes this trend to leadership within police forces prioritizing the policing of perceived 'hate' over traditional criminal apprehension.
