Tocantins Public Prosecutor investigates homicide rates and police shortages in Palmas

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Tocantins (MPTO) has launched a formal procedure to investigate the operational conditions of the Homicide and Person Protection Police Station (DHPP) in Palmas. The investigation, led by the Specialized Public Security Action Group (Gaesp), seeks to address critical shortages of delegates, clerks, and investigators within the unit.

This action follows a rise in violent deaths in the capital. Data indicates that Palmas recorded 47 homicides between January and October 15, 2026, compared to 49 violent deaths throughout the entirety of 2025. The MPTO has granted the Civil Police, Military Police, and the State Secretariat of Public Security 15 days to provide data regarding investigations, police staffing levels, and crime prevention measures.
