Tocopilla Advances Study to Close Historic Las Tres Marías Waste Dump
A technical study is underway in Tocopilla to assess environmental conditions at the former Las Tres Marías waste dump and nearby coastal areas. Consultants have collected water and sediment samples to evaluate the impacts of the 2015 debris flow and to identify zones that may require remediation. The findings will be presented to the municipal authorities, who will use the data to plan the future closure of the site under the city's Environmental and Social Recovery Program.
The regional Environment Secretary, Verónica Araneda Gómez, highlighted that the study provides essential technical background for the community’s longstanding demand to seal the dump, and that the final report will guide municipal decisions on managing the area’s environmental recovery.
