Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru form critical minerals alliance
Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru have entered a strategic alliance to integrate their mining sectors and secure the supply of critical minerals. During a ministerial meeting in Santiago, the four nations signed a joint declaration aimed at positioning the region as a reliable and competitive global supplier of essential resources like copper and lithium, which are vital for the energy transition and artificial intelligence technologies.
As part of this cooperation, Chile and Argentina have reactivated the 1997 Mining Integration and Complementation Treaty. This reactivation includes the approval of specific operating protocols for three major binational mining projects: Vicuña (integrating the Josemaría, Tamberías, and Filo del Sol deposits), NexoAndino (comprising the Los Helados and Lunahuasi deposits), and Filo Sur. These protocols facilitate the shared use of infrastructure, logistics, and resources across the Andes.
The binational mining portfolio is estimated to unlock over USD 20.7 billion in investment. This strategic move comes as experts project that global demand for critical minerals could surge by 400% to 600% over the next decade.
