Tocopilla mandates mask use due to high dust levels

Health authorities in Tocopilla, Antofagasta region, have mandated the use of face masks for individuals in public spaces and work zones to mitigate respiratory risks. The measure follows a recent alluvial flood that left streets covered in mud, which has since solidified due to high temperatures and turned into airborne dust.

Rodrigo Medina, the regional health authority (Seremi de Salud), recommended the use of KN95, N95, or triple-fold masks, particularly during debris removal and cleaning efforts. Authorities also suggested eye protection to prevent allergic reactions and other respiratory issues. The mandate is an exceptional and temporary preventive measure that will be reviewed periodically based on environmental conditions and will not exceed the current state of exception for catastrophe.

In addition to health measures, the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) has begun technical inspections of ravines and alluvial pools to evaluate the effectiveness of containment walls and mitigation works following the flood.
