Todd Blanche nomination triggers GOP Senate conflict
Internal tensions within the Republican Party have surfaced regarding the nomination of Todd Blanche as Attorney General. Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas initially opposed the nomination, contributing to friction between the MAGA administration and elements of the Senate GOP.
To secure support from Tillis and Cornyn, Blanche announced that he had instructed the Department of Justice to terminate the "Anti-Weaponization Fund." This $1.776 billion fund was established following a civil lawsuit settlement regarding the 2020 leak of Donald Trump's tax returns. The fund was designed to provide financial relief to individuals who claimed they were unfairly targeted by the previous administration's use of government resources.
The fund faced legal challenges from judges and potential lawsuits from critics, and its termination was reportedly a condition for the senators to advance Blanche out of the committee hearing.
