Toddler receives world-first surgery for rare skull condition
A one-year-old boy from Derbyshire, Rory Potter, has undergone a world-first surgery to treat severe sagittal craniosynostosis. The condition occurs when the skull fuses prematurely before birth, causing the head to become long and narrow, which can lead to learning disabilities, vision loss, and breathing issues.
While traditional treatments often involve skull reshaping or the use of stainless steel springs to widen the gap for brain development, medical experts have developed a less invasive method using “super elastic” springs made of nitinol, a nickel and titanium alloy.
Professor Owase Jeelani, a consultant neurosurgeon who led the procedure, noted that while traditional stainless steel springs are robust, they lack the ability to fine-tune the force applied to the skull. The new nitinol springs provide greater flexibility and may prevent the need for additional surgeries. The procedure is considered a significant advancement for children suffering from this rare condition.
