Todmorden rail station lifts slated for November 2026 start, aiming for autumn 2027 completion

After years of delays, work on lifts at Todmorden Rail Station in West Yorkshire is set to begin in November 2026, with the goal of opening them to passengers by autumn 2027. The new lifts will serve the Bradford‑and‑Leeds direction platform, which currently can only be reached by stairs, and will improve access to the Manchester platform that now requires a steep slope.

Funding was secured in 2019 through the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme. Following repeated contractor problems, Network Rail has taken direct control of the project and appointed Story Contracting to carry out the works. Calder Valley MP Josh Fenton‑Glynn, who has campaigned for the scheme for over a decade, said he was reassured by Network Rail’s commitment, stating, "We are working to deliver it as quickly as possible, with the ambition of having it completed and available for passengers in autumn 2027."
