Todor Alexandrov assassinated in Pirin Mountains

On August 31, 1924, Todor Alexandrov, a prominent Macedonian political leader and head of the renewed Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO), was killed in the Pirin Mountains near the village of Sugarevo.

Alexandrov was a central figure in the revolutionary movement, having joined the organization in 1898. Following the Balkan Wars and World War I, he worked to rebuild the organization in the Pirin region of Macedonia, establishing military and organizational bases to conduct armed actions in the Vardar region. He was known for opposing the policies of the Yugoslav government and the agrarian government of Aleksandar Stamboliški.

While the physical perpetrators of the assassination were punished by the VMRO shortly after the event, historical debate continues regarding the true mastermind behind the killing. At the time of his death, the Yugoslav government had offered a reward of 100,000 dinars for his capture.
