Todor Zhivkov's Death Marked 28 Years On in Bulgaria

Today marks 28 years since former Bulgarian communist leader Todor Zhivkov died on 5 August 1998 in Sofia. He passed away at 20:05 after a three‑week coma caused by a severe viral infection and bronchopneumonia, according to the state news agency BTA.

The government declined the family’s and the Bulgarian Socialist Party’s request for a state funeral, noting that Zhivkov had not been active in public life for years and faced pending legal cases. His body was placed in the central Sofia cemetery near the former mausoleum of Georgi Dimitrov, and a modest procession followed. International news services such as Reuters, AFP and TASS reported the death, citing Bulgarian hospital officials and state radio.

Zhivkov, who led the Bulgarian Communist Party from 1954 to 1989 and served as head of state for over three decades, was the longest‑serving ruler in Bulgaria’s modern history. His tenure was marked by close alignment with the Soviet Union and extensive political control.
