Tofu varieties and preparation methods
Different varieties of tofu offer distinct flavors and textures depending on their manufacturing processes. Nutrition expert Daniela Krehl from the Verbraucherzentrale Bayern suggests that selecting the correct type for specific dishes is essential for successful cooking.
Natural tofu has a neutral, sometimes nutty flavor and is highly versatile. To achieve a crispy texture, it can be patted dry, cubed, and coated in starch before being pan-fried with seasonings like soy sauce, garlic, or paprika. It is also suitable for salads and grilling. Smoked tofu provides a stronger, smoky aroma and is described as a simpler option for adding immediate flavor and consistency to meals, making it suitable even as a cold cut.
