Togo addresses water access and literacy challenges

In northern Togo, specifically the Savanes region, access to potable water has become a critical factor for social stability and economic resilience. To address this, two new solar-powered water stations have been commissioned. Funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), these installations aim to reduce dependence on conventional energy and mitigate social fragilities caused by resource scarcity.

Key infrastructure projects include a 2,000 m³ water tower and a treatment unit capable of processing 7,200 m³ per day in Cinkassé, alongside developments at the Dalwak dam in Dapaong. Binta Sanneh, the UNDP resident representative in Togo, noted that such community infrastructure serves as an investment in peace and human security.

Separately, Togo faces significant literacy challenges, with over 1.3 million people unable to read or write. This issue disproportionately affects women and rural populations. While 4 billion FCFA was projected for literacy efforts during the 2024-2025 period, reports indicate only 403 million FCFA has been mobilized to date.
