Togo and China sign strategic partnership and digital cooperation agreements
Togo and China have established a new strategic partnership following an official visit by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to China from October 9 to 16, 2026. The two nations signed a joint declaration to build a “China-Togo community with a shared future in the new era.”
The partnership focuses on aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Togo’s Vision 2040. Key areas of cooperation include economic sovereignty and digital transformation. As part of this strengthening relationship, Togo signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei Technologies in Shenzhen to support the country’s digital roadmap for 2026–2031. This agreement covers connectivity, technological innovation, smart transport, and the modernization of customs services, with an emphasis on local skill development and technology transfer.
Togo expressed support for China’s global development, security, civilization, and governance initiatives. In return, China commended Togo’s economic growth and stability, supporting its recent constitutional reforms.
