Togo and France report shifts in business creation and failure rates

In Togo, entrepreneurship has shown signs of recovery. According to statistics from the Centre de formalités des entreprises (CFE), 11,978 new businesses were created between January and September 2026, representing a 7.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The third quarter saw a slight uptick in activity compared to the second quarter, signaling a return to growth after previous slowdowns.

In France, the economic landscape shows a mix of rising business failures and increased entrepreneurship. Data from the Banque de France indicates that 70,766 business failures (including reorganizations and liquidations) occurred over a twelve-month period ending in August 2026, a 4.8% annual increase. This figure is 19.3% higher than the 2010-2019 average, which the central bank attributes to a degraded economic climate.

Simultaneously, Insee reports that business creations in France rose by 11.4% over the twelve months ending in August 2026. This growth is primarily driven by micro-entrepreneurs, whose registrations jumped by 14.4%. In August alone, micro-entrepreneurs accounted for 70.2% of all new business creations, with the strongest growth seen in the information and communication sectors.
