Togo receives 305 new boreholes to improve rural water access

The Togolese government has officially received 305 new boreholes designed to improve access to potable water in the Plateaux region. The project, which covers 285 villages across 12 prefectures and 32 communes, is expected to benefit more than 70,000 residents.

This initiative is the result of cooperation between Togo and the People's Republic of China, following agreements reached in late 2023. The construction work was carried out by the Chinese firm ZHONGMEI ENGINEERING GROUP LIMITED. The project involved the installation of boreholes equipped with manual pumps to provide a sustainable water source.

Séna Alipui, the Minister Delegate in charge of Water and Sanitation, emphasized that access to clean water is a critical factor for public health, hygiene, and economic development. The project aims to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhea, while also reducing the time households must spend searching for water.
