Togo bishops meet in Kara to discuss Church and national politics

The Conference of Bishops of Togo (CET) is holding its 143rd ordinary session in Kara from October 11 to October 16, 2026. The meeting focuses on various aspects of Catholic Church life, including pastoral priorities, the centenary of the Pontifical Mission Societies, and training within major seminaries for the 2026-2027 academic year.

In addition to ecclesiastical matters, the bishops are addressing the national sociopolitical situation in Togo. This inclusion has prompted discussions regarding the role of religious leaders within a secular state. While the separation of church and state remains a fundamental principle, the session serves as a platform for the clergy to reflect on national challenges, justice, human dignity, and social cohesion.
