Togo: Child accidentally kills woman with father's shotgun

A fatal accidental shooting occurred in the village of Bavé, within the Danyi Elavanyon canton of Togo, on the weekend of September 19. A 7-year-old boy, a primary school student, fatally shot a woman who was visiting the family home.

The incident reportedly occurred after the boy's father returned from a hunting trip and placed his shotgun in the home without unloading it. While the child was handling the weapon, a shot was discharged, striking the visitor and killing her. A man present at the scene was also wounded by the same shot and was evacuated to a health center for treatment.

Following the incident, law enforcement officials detained both the child and his father. They were presented to the justice system in Kpalimé. The minor has since been released, while the father remains in detention as authorities investigate the legality of his firearm permit and the circumstances surrounding the discharge.
