Togo commemorates 40th anniversary of 1986 terrorist aggression

Togo marked the 40th anniversary of the September 23, 1986, terrorist aggression with various national ceremonies. The commemorations aimed to honor the military and civilian martyrs who died during the attack, which involved a heavily armed commando targeting strategic points in Lomé.

In Lomé, National Assembly President Komi Sélom Klassou laid a wreath at the Place des Martyrs on behalf of the President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé. The ceremony included the playing of the national anthem by the Togolese Armed Forces and a moment of silence. High-ranking officials, including government ministers and military leaders such as General Tchakpélé Aklesso, were in attendance.

Across the country, religious services were held in the Plateaux-ouest region, including Kpalimé, Agou, Kpélé, and Danyi. These services included Muslim prayers, Catholic masses, and Protestant worship to pray for the souls of the victims and for national peace, security, and social cohesion. The theme for this year's commemoration focused on strengthening national unity and resilience against terrorism.
