Togo diplomatic and diaspora activities in the US and UN
Togolese diaspora organizations and government officials have engaged in distinct diplomatic and advocacy activities in the United States and at the United Nations.
In Washington, D.C., three Togolese organizations—Togo Debout USA, Mouvement Patriotes Togolais, and Pyramide Togo—conducted an advocacy mission during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual legislative conference. Led by Claudine Y. Mathey, the group met with various U.S. officials, including the office of Senator Joni Ernst, to raise concerns regarding human rights and democratic stability in Togo. A central point of contention involved the government's response to a January 29 ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
Separately, at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey celebrated the adoption of the ‘Correct the Map’ initiative. Supported by Togo on behalf of the African Group, the resolution passed with 164 votes. The initiative seeks to promote world maps that more accurately represent the true dimensions of continents, specifically Africa.
