Togo faces electricity disruptions due to gas pipeline maintenance

Togo is expected to face electricity supply disruptions due to scheduled maintenance on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo). The maintenance work, which involves modernizing equipment and replacing a submarine valve at the Lomé branch, is scheduled to occur between August 28 and September 21, 2026.

The operations will cause a temporary suspension of natural gas shipments from Nigeria to Togo and Benin. Because Togo relies on this gas to fuel its thermal power plants, the interruption is likely to impact both domestic electricity production and regional power imports.

To mitigate the impact, the Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET) announced it will utilize more expensive liquid fuels to compensate for the expected deficit. Despite these measures, CEET warned that “disruptions cannot be totally avoided” and advised consumers to disconnect electrical appliances during outages to prevent damage.
