Togo opposition coalition demands political transition

A coalition of opposition parties and civil society organizations in Togo has issued a memorandum calling for a political transition and a return to the 1992 Constitution. Meeting in Lomé on August 25, 2026, the group includes eight political parties—such as ADDI, ANC, and Les Démocrates—alongside three political groupings and various civil society organizations.

The coalition argues that the 2024 constitutional reform lacks consensus and is incompatible with a true democratic order. They are leveraging a recent ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice, claiming the decision renders the current Fifth Republic and its institutions illegal and illegitimate. While the signatories view the court's ruling as a mandate to restore the previous constitutional order, legal analysts note that the ruling did not explicitly annul the 2024 Constitution or mandate a transition.

The group is seeking involvement from international partners, including ECOWAS, the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations, and the United States, to assist in restoring what they describe as a ‘normal constitutional order.’ However, the initiative does not represent the entirety of the Togolese opposition, as several major political formations have not joined the movement.
