Togo opposition contests constitutional debate and organizes Brussels summit

Political tensions are rising in Togo following the announcement of a university symposium in Lomé scheduled for October 2026. The event, which aims to discuss regional jurisdictions and state sovereignty, has drawn criticism from the ‘Manifeste Génération Togo’ political group. Opponents argue the symposium may be an attempt to bypass a January 2026 ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice, which characterized Togo’s transition to the Fifth Republic as an ‘unconstitutional change of government.’

In a separate move to strengthen democratic resistance, the organizations CODITOGO and FREEDOM-TOGO MLN have announced the ‘Assises des Forces démocratiques togolaises et de la diaspora.’ This summit is set to take place in Brussels, Belgium, from November 27 to 29, 2026. The meeting intends to foster unity among Togolese opposition forces and the diaspora, establishing a permanent framework for strategic coordination and collective action against the current administration.
