Togo seeks strengthened ties with US officials in Washington
During the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) annual conference in Washington, D.C., Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey advocated for strengthened partnerships between Togo and African American elected officials. Dussey expressed a desire to transform diplomatic dialogue into concrete, long-term initiatives and cooperation between Togolese and African American communities.
During the same period, the organization Togo Debout USA, alongside the Mouvement Patriotes Togolais and Pyramide Togo, conducted advocacy efforts in Washington regarding Togo’s democratic situation and human rights. Led by Claudine Y. Mathey, the group engaged with members of the U.S. Congress and delivered correspondence to various congressional offices, including that of Senator Joni Ernst.
Mathey reported interpellating Minister Dussey twice during the African Diaspora Forum, specifically questioning the Togolese government's stance on a January 2026 ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice. In response to discussions regarding domestic politics, Dussey focused on the African diaspora and promoted the ‘Correct the Map’ campaign, an initiative supported by the African Union and the United Nations General Assembly.
