Togo and China elevate partnership through new multi-sectoral agreements

Togo and China have elevated their bilateral relationship to a ‘China-Togo Community with a Shared Future in the New Era’ following high-level meetings in Beijing between Council President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé and Premier Li Qiang.

Thirteen multi-sectoral agreements were signed, covering finance, economy, security, agriculture, and digital trade. Notably, a protocol was signed for the partial cancellation of Togo’s public debt. Togo is also actively seeking to attract Chinese financial institutions to strengthen trade finance and industrial investment, following a 55% increase in bilateral trade in 2025.

Diplomatic discussions also focused on technological transformation, with Togo exploring Chinese advancements in robotics, 6G, and artificial intelligence to drive economic modernization. Additionally, Togo expressed support for the Chinese city of Xiamen to host the secretariat of the BBNJ agreement, advocating for inclusive ocean governance and marine biodiversity protection.
