Togo weather agency forecasts normal to surplus rainfall for small rainy season

The National Meteorological Agency (ANAMET) has released seasonal forecasts for the small rainy season in southern Togo, covering the period from September to November. Total rainfall is expected to be normal to surplus, potentially exceeding the 1991–2020 climatic reference established by the World Meteorological Organization.

Despite the expected rainfall volume, experts warn of a late start to the agricultural season and long dry spells during the early stages. While hydrological levels in most basins, such as the Mono and Lake Togo, are expected to remain normal, an excess of water is anticipated in the extreme northwest portion of the Oti basin.

ANAMET has advised farmers to prepare soil early, utilize short-cycle and resilient crop varieties, and implement supplemental irrigation. Additionally, the agency cautioned the population to avoid occupying flood-prone areas for housing or cultivation and urged rational water management to support hydroelectric dams and agricultural developments.
