Tohoku University and Western Digital launch AI data infrastructure institute

Tohoku University and Western Digital (WD) have established the ‘WD × Tohoku University AI Data Infrastructure Co-Creation Research Institute’ to develop next-generation storage technologies. Located at the university’s Katahira Campus within the Institute of Electrical Communications, the research center began operations on July 1, 2026, and is scheduled to run until June 30, 2029.

The partnership aims to address the exponential growth of data driven by the rapid spread of artificial intelligence. With approximately 80% of data in cloud data centers currently stored on hard disk drives (HDDs), the institute will focus on increasing recording capacity and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). Research areas include advanced recording materials, device physics, and storage system engineering.

In addition to technical innovation, the institute will focus on human resource development to support the sustainable growth of AI infrastructure. Koichi Takano, WD Japan Country Officer, noted that the collaboration combines Tohoku University’s world-class research capabilities with WD’s leadership in storage innovation to accelerate breakthroughs in material science and engineering.
