Tokat health outbreak suspected to be viral rather than waterborne
Approximately 5,000 people in Tokat, Turkey, have sought medical attention reporting symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain. Following the surge in hospital visits, the Ministry of Health's General Directorate of Public Health and Samsun Metropolitan Municipality conducted tests on local drinking water samples.
Tokat Mayor Mehmet Kemal Yazıcıoğlu stated that preliminary results indicate the drinking water is clean, providing relief to local authorities. Medical experts suggest the illness is likely a viral and contagious infection, with norovirus being mentioned as a possibility. While most patients are receiving outpatient treatment, a small number have required hospitalization. Yazıcıoğlu has urged citizens to prioritize personal hygiene to prevent further spread.
