Tokenization expands digital ownership of real-world assets

Tokenization is transforming how ownership of real-world assets (RWA) is represented by converting rights to physical or financial holdings into blockchain-based tokens. This process allows for the division of large assets into smaller, more accessible portions, potentially lowering barriers to entry for various investors. Blockchain networks provide a transparent ledger to track ownership transfers and transaction histories.

Ethereum has emerged as a leading blockchain for this ecosystem. As of September 7, Ethereum held approximately $17.65 billion in distributed RWA value, accounting for nearly 45% of the total market across all tracked networks. The network's RWA composition is increasingly focused on institutional-grade products, such as money market funds, Treasury products, and institutional credit.

Tokenized US Treasuries represent a significant area of growth, combining familiar short-duration assets with blockchain-based settlement. While other networks may see higher trading velocity, Ethereum is increasingly functioning as a balance sheet layer where large institutional positions can be held and managed on-chain.
