Tokenized commodities market reaches $5.55 billion
The market for tokenized commodities reached a capitalization of $5.55 billion by late March 2026, driven largely by gold-backed tokens from providers like Paxos and Tether. Industry leaders are expanding the scope of tokenization beyond simple price tracking to include yield-bearing assets. For instance, Paxos Labs introduced PAXGy to facilitate institutional gold lending, while Theo has launched products like thGOLD and thSLVR to offer income from gold and silver leasing.
Beyond precious metals, the sector is exploring energy commodities. Projects such as Energy Substantiation are developing tokens for natural gas and Brent crude, and EnSub has extended its WTIC oil token from Ethereum to Solana. These digital assets allow for fractional ownership and 24/7 trading, potentially opening traditional financing markets to a broader range of investors.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has noted the growing demand for tokenized assets, including stocks and bonds, which are increasingly used for small-scale trades and off-hours transactions. However, the IMF and industry analysts warn of significant risks, including credit defaults, custody challenges, regulatory uncertainty, and logistical complexities in managing physical reserves.
