Tokenized securities and crypto ETFs face regulatory scrutiny
The cryptocurrency and traditional finance sectors are seeing an expansion in tokenized assets, ranging from exchange-traded products (ETFs) to equities. While many investors associate crypto ETFs primarily with Bitcoin and Ether, products tied to assets such as Solana, XRP, and Avalanche are already trading. This expansion has prompted the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to question whether existing rules for “novel” ETFs remain sufficient for the evolving industry.
Industry leaders suggest that tokenized stocks could follow the rapid growth trajectory seen by stablecoins over the next several years. Bullish CEO Tom Farley predicts mainstream adoption of tokenized securities could arrive within one to two years, potentially catalyzed by a landmark IPO. Bullish has already tokenized its own equity cap table on the Solana blockchain.
Despite this momentum, significant hurdles remain. Flowdesk CEO Guilhem Chaumont notes that institutional adoption faces obstacles regarding regulatory approval and custody concerns. Currently, the tokenized stock market is valued at approximately $4.63 billion, a figure that remains concentrated among a few major providers.
