Tokyo 2020 Paralympic legacy discussed by IPC and Tokyo officials
To mark the fifth anniversary of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike to discuss the ongoing legacy of the event. Discussions focused on the continuous improvement of accessibility, the promotion of para-sports, and the expansion of community and private sector involvement.
Tokyo has reported significant infrastructure progress since the Games, including 98% of railway stations having elevator access and 100% platform door coverage on Toei Subway lines. Additionally, the number of registered para-sports volunteers is expected to grow from 4,300 in 2021 to 10,000 by 2026, with 1,800 companies currently acting as supporters.
Special event attendees included IPC Special Ambassadors Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori. President Parsons praised the trio for their significant promotional impact on the Paralympic movement. The ambassadors performed the charity song ‘Ameagari no Step’ and discussed how the Games have fostered social changes and increased awareness of barrier-free environments.
