Tokyo 23 Wards to build new public crematoriums
The Tokyo 23 Wards have decided to establish new public, small-scale crematoriums to address rising cremation costs and projected capacity shortages. Currently, seven of the nine existing facilities in the 23 wards are privately operated, with many fees exceeding 80,000 yen—significantly higher than the 40,000 to 50,000 yen range seen at public facilities.
In addition to high costs, an aging population is expected to increase death rates, leading to concerns that cremation capacity may become critically strained by around 2040. The new facilities aim to increase capacity and lower overall costs. Specific locations and the exact timeline for development are still under consideration, though officials aim to have the facilities operational within approximately five years.
