Tokyo and Taipei launch major fashion initiatives for young designers
Regional fashion initiatives are highlighting new talent and diverse design philosophies in East Asia. In Tokyo, the Metropolitan Government has announced 59 finalists for two major competitions: the ‘Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2027’ (NFDT) and the ‘Sustainable Fashion Design Award 2027’ (SFDA). The NFDT includes an inclusive design category focused on accessibility for people with disabilities, while the SFDA emphasizes sustainability by repurposing traditional materials like kimono fabrics. Public voting for these finalists is currently underway via Instagram.
Simultaneously, Taipei Fashion Week 2026 has launched under the theme ‘Fashion is ____’, aiming to explore fashion as a medium for self-expression and cultural connection. The event features a significant international collaboration, marking the first time the week has partnered with Italian brands, including TOD’S. The festivities include a major crossover show at the Taipei Music Center, featuring local designers and musical performances, alongside various pop-up exhibitions and installations across the Dadaocheng, East District, and Xinyi districts.
