Tokyo club hosts viral ‘book rave’ for readers
An unconventional event known as ‘Jucy Book Rave’ held at the SPREAD club in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa district has gained viral attention. Instead of traditional high-energy dancing, attendees gathered on carpets covering the dance floor to read books accompanied by ambient music.
During the event, participants could bring their own books or purchase a specific novel provided by the venue, allowing dozens of people to read the same story simultaneously. While the atmosphere begins as a quiet, library-like setting, the venue eventually transitions back into a standard dance space as the night progresses.
This shift in nightlife reflects changing social habits in Japan. Data indicates a decline in alcohol consumption, with recent research showing that 29% of Japanese youth in their 20s have never consumed alcohol. Such events represent an attempt by nightlife venues to attract a sober demographic and utilize space during non-peak hours.
