Tokyo DisneySea to close Aquatopia attraction on September 14
The Aquatopia attraction at Tokyo DisneySea is scheduled to close permanently on September 14. Operated by the Oriental Land Company, the ride opened on September 4, 2001, as an early implementation of trackless ride technology by Walt Disney Imagineering.
The attraction featured thirty-six three-person watercraft navigating an experimental pool filled with fountains and whirlpools. Because the vehicles operated without tracks, they could spin, zigzag, and change direction unpredictably, ensuring that no two rides were identical.
This specific technology served as a precursor to more modern Disney attractions, such as Rise of the Resistance, Mystic Manor, and Pooh’s Hunny Hunt. The closure comes shortly after the ride's 25th anniversary, missing a full anniversary celebration by ten days.
