Tokyo expands private junior high school tuition subsidies

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced an expansion of its tuition subsidy program for students attending private junior high schools. For the 2026 fiscal year, the annual support amount will increase from 100,000 yen to 120,000 yen, featuring a temporary 20,000 yen addition to the existing cap.

The subsidy is available to guardians of students residing in Tokyo who are enrolled in private junior high schools, special needs schools, or compulsory education schools. Notably, there are no income restrictions for this assistance. To qualify, both the student and the guardian must have maintained residency in Tokyo from May 1, 2026, through the time of application.

Applications will be accepted online via the Tokyo Private School Foundation website from September 1 to October 15, 2026. Following a review process in late autumn, funds are expected to be disbursed around late December. The government encourages eligible guardians to apply within the designated period to ensure timely receipt of the funds.
