Tokyo film festivals to showcase international cinema in late 2026

Two major film festivals are scheduled to take place in Tokyo in late 2026, offering diverse perspectives on global culture and social issues.

The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival will run for ten days from October 26 to November 4 in the Hibiya, Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Ginza districts. The festival features a wide array of categories, including a competition where 15 films will be selected from 1,892 entries to vie for the Tokyo Grand Prix. Highlighted works include the opening film ‘SUKIYAKI: Let's Walk Looking Up’, the centerpiece ‘Godzilla -0.0-’, and the closing film ‘Colony’.

Additionally, the Asian Documentary Film Festival 2026 will be held on November 7 and 8 at Euro Live in Shibuya. This third annual event will screen 10 documentary films focusing on social realities across Asia, including themes of religion, refugees, and youth culture in China. The festival features special navigators such as Utamaru, Seiko Ito, Sahel Rose, and Yukino Nagai, who will participate in discussions with experts following the screenings.
