Tokyo hosts trial of AI suitcase robot for visually impaired navigation

A demonstration of an AI-powered suitcase-shaped robot designed to assist visually impaired individuals is taking place in Tokyo throughout October. The trial is being held at the Toranomon Hills complex and features two courses: one for guiding users through indoor and outdoor environments and another for general visitors to test the device.

Developed primarily by the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), the robot uses sensors, cameras, and an integrated AI chatbot to detect obstacles and guide users safely. Beyond navigation, the AI can provide information about stores, products, and menus to facilitate independent shopping and movement. The project is organized by the AI Suitcase Consortium, with cooperation from Mori Building Co., which aims to eventually offer the device as a rental service.
