Tokyo increases marriage support budget to 700 million yen
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is significantly ramping up its marriage support initiatives, allocating approximately 700 million yen for the 2026 fiscal year. This budget represents a substantial increase compared to previous years, as the government seeks to address the declining birthrate in a region where the total fertility rate has fallen below 1.0.
Support measures include various matchmaking events, such as running clubs and themed gatherings at locations like Ueno Zoo and Hanayashiki Amusement Park. Additionally, the city has introduced an AI-driven matching app, 'TOKYO Enmusubi,' which has already registered approximately 17,000 users. To ensure the seriousness of participants, the programs require the submission of single certificates and signed pledges.
Despite the high demand and popularity of these events, challenges remain. Surveys indicate that over 50% of residents are unaware of these initiatives, and officials face difficulties in tracking the long-term success and outcomes of the various programs.
