Tokyo core inflation rises 1.8% in August

Core inflation in Tokyo's 23 wards rose 1.8% year-on-year in August, marking the 60th consecutive month of increases. The figure, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, slightly exceeded market expectations of 1.7%.

Food prices excluding fresh food rose 3.6%, driven by significant increases in specific items: bento prices rose 26.7%, coffee beans 31.2%, domestic beef 10.2%, and ice cream 6.7%. Conversely, rice prices fell 14.2%.

Other notable shifts included a 3.2% rise in medical fees and a 2.0% increase in private rents. Energy costs saw a decline due to government subsidies, with electricity falling 2.4%, city gas 1.6%, and gasoline 2.7%.

The index excluding both fresh food and fuel rose 2.0%, a metric closely watched by the Bank of Japan as a gauge of trend inflation. This data serves as a leading indicator for nationwide price trends in Japan.
