Tokyo Information University develops voice control for muscular dystrophy patients
Tokyo Information University has developed a voice-input game controller designed to assist individuals with muscular dystrophy in playing Nintendo Switch games. Developed in collaboration with National Shimoshizu Hospital, the system allows users to execute button commands through short vocalizations, such as “a” or “shita”.
The university will showcase this technology at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held at Makuhari Messe. In addition to the accessibility system, the university will exhibit a collection of “serious games” that address social issues like elderly driving, life-saving AED use, and fake news, as well as the title “Gedou Chinso Club” available on Steam.
This development aligns with broader industry trends toward gaming accessibility. Major companies like Sony Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft have been expanding hardware and software support, such as the PlayStation Access controller and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, to ensure gaming is inclusive for users with diverse physical and sensory needs.
