Tokyo International Film Festival announces 39th lineup
The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival has announced its lineup of opening, centerpiece, and closing films for its upcoming run from October 26 to November 4, 2026.
“SUKIYAKI Ue o Muite Arukou” will serve as the opening film. Starring Junichi Okada, Tori Matsuzaka, and Taiga Nakano, the musical drama depicts the creation of the legendary 1963 song “Sukiyaki” and the lives of composer Hachidai Nakamura, lyricist Rokusuke Ei, and singer Kyu Sakamoto.
The centerpiece selection is “Godzilla -0.0-”, directed by Takashi Yamazaki. This new entry in the franchise follows the events of “Godzilla Minus One” and focuses on Japan's struggle for recovery.
Closing the festival is “Colony,” a South Korean panic action film directed by Yong Sang-ho. The film, which featured in the midnight screenings at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a group of survivors fighting evolving, intelligent infected individuals during a bioterrorism outbreak in a Seoul skyscraper.
