Japan issues Level 5 landslide warnings amid fatal flooding
Extreme rainfall caused by Typhoon 24 and a seasonal rain front has triggered severe weather across eastern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a Level 5 emergency landslide warning—the highest possible level—for Niijima and other islands in the Izu chain, warning that lives are in imminent danger.
In Fukushima Prefecture, a woman in her 60s died after her vehicle became submerged in a flooded underpass in Iwaki. The heavy rains have also caused significant disruptions to infrastructure, including service suspensions and reduced train operations on several JR East lines in the Kanto and Tohoku regions.
In the Kanto area, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba, heavy rain has led to school closures and urban flooding. Niijima recorded a local record 485mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. Authorities continue to warn of risks including landslides, river flooding, and inundation in low-lying areas as the storm system moves north.
