Tokyo Metro and Mitsubishi Electric to debut new train circuit system
Tokyo Metro and Mitsubishi Electric have announced the world’s first implementation of a new main circuit system for the Tozai Line 05 series trains. This system combines the ‘SynTRACS’ synchronous reluctance motor system with an ultra-compact VVVF inverter device.
The SynTRACS system, which utilizes reluctance torque, is expected to provide higher efficiency and lower heat loss compared to standard induction motor systems. The specific motors being deployed are approximately 9% lighter than previous models while providing a 22% increase in output.
The accompanying ultra-compact VVVF inverter utilizes advanced SiC power semiconductor elements and high-performance CPUs to reduce heat and size. This innovation has resulted in an 81% reduction in volume and a 43% reduction in weight compared to conventional inverter devices, allowing for more flexible equipment placement under the train floor.
Combined, these technologies are projected to achieve energy savings of between 20% and 30%. Commercial operation for the upgraded 05 series trains is scheduled to begin in December 2026, with plans to introduce a total of nine train sets by fiscal year 2030.
