Tokyo Metropolitan Government to update official app with biometric support
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and GovTech Tokyo have announced a major renewal of the official ‘Tokyo App,’ scheduled for October 30, 2026. The update focuses on improving accessibility and usability by introducing larger buttons, enhanced screen reading functions, and support for passkeys, allowing users to log in via facial or fingerprint recognition instead of passwords.
In conjunction with the update, a proxy application system for the ‘Tokyo App Life Support Project’ will launch on November 4, 2026. This system allows family members or legal guardians to apply on behalf of individuals who find it difficult to operate smartphones due to disabilities or dementia. Eligible applicants include those with disability certificates or those certified as requiring nursing care or support.
Proxy applicants can include legal representatives, spouses, relatives within the second degree of kinship, or members of the same household. The application process requires identity verification using My Number Cards for both the applicant and the proxy, along with supporting documentation such as disability certificates or proof of relationship. Successful applicants will be granted 11,000 Tokyo points, with the application period running until April 1, 2027.
