Tokyo Metropolitan Police promote traffic safety ahead of autumn campaign

Ahead of the Autumn National Traffic Safety Campaign scheduled from September 21 to 30, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department held an awareness event in Nerima Ward to promote road safety.

Metropolitan Police Superintendent General Hiroki Tsutsui, alongside comedy duo Pekopa and the dance group Avantgardey, emphasized the increased risk of pedestrian fatalities during the year-end months as sunset occurs earlier. Authorities are urging pedestrians to wear reflective materials or bright-colored clothing to increase visibility to drivers.

The event also highlighted recent regulatory changes, including the reduction of the legal speed limit to 30 km/h on residential roads without central lines, effective from September 1. Officials stressed the importance of both drivers and pedestrians maintaining high awareness to prevent accidents caused by signal violations or failure to stop.
